Six ways dads can be superheroes to their premature babies

Premature birth can bring a host of challenges and emotions for families. World Prematurity Day observed on 17 November each year raises awareness of preterm birth and the concerns of preterm babies and their families worldwide. While much focus is placed on mothers, fathers also play a crucial role in their baby’s emotional and physical development. Dis-Chem Baby City is highlighting how dads can bond with their fragile new-born’s.

Dis-Chem & Dis-Chem Baby City Clinic Admin Manager, Ernst Van Rensburg, shares practical advice for fathers navigating this unique journey with their little ones.

1. Engage in skin-to-skin contact

Also known as kangaroo care, this is especially beneficial for premature infants. Fathers can hold their baby against their bare chest, providing warmth and comfort, while also improving the baby’s physiological stability.

2. Be involved in care routines

Fathers can actively participate in feeding, diaper changes, and other caregiving tasks. This hands-on involvement helps and contributes to a sense of partnership in parenting.

3. Communicate through touch and voice

Premature babies are sensitive to touch and sound. Fathers can soothe their babies by gently caressing them, talking softly, or singing lullabies. These interactions can be incredibly calming and reassuring for the baby.

4. Create a routine together

Establishing a consistent routine for feeding, sleeping, and interaction helps premature babies feel secure and develop a sense of stability. Fathers can work alongside healthcare professionals to understand and implement a routine that best supports their baby’s needs.

5. Seek support and education

Engaging in parenting classes, support groups, and educational resources can empower fathers with the knowledge and confidence they need to bond effectively with their premature baby. Connecting with other fathers who have similar experiences can also provide valuable insights and emotional support. Some apps can assist fathers with information like the recently launched Baby & Me Parenting Programme app, which offers wide-ranging information and knowledge relating to pregnancy and babies. This innovative programme is designed to support expectant and new parents in effortlessly navigating the challenges of pregnancy and early childcare.

6. Be patient and adaptable

Premature babies may have unique needs and developmental timelines. Fathers should be patient and flexible, understanding that building a bond is a gradual process. It’s important to celebrate small milestones and remain optimistic.

“Being there, even in the smallest ways, makes all the difference. Your presence is a source of strength for your baby,” Van Rensburg encourages fathers.
