Oprah’s spiritual guru, Eckhart Tolle, coming to SA in 2024

I think he is a prophet for our time. These are the words of Oprah Winfrey as she speaks of Eckhart Tolle, one of the most inspiring and visionary spiritual teachers and self-help authors of the past 25 years.

And, to the delight of South African fans, Tolle will be making his way to Cape Town and Pretoria in February 2024 for a two-stop speaking tour.

Tolle gained broad acclaim after Oprah introduced him to her audience through a recommendation of his first book The Power of Now in O Magazine in 2000. Five years later Tolle published A New Earth which was selected for Oprah’s Book Club, and which she describes as one of the most transformative books she’s ever read. Both books have since gone on to become international bestsellers, being translated into 52 languages, to bring Tolle’s philosophy of living life in the present to millions of readers globally. The pair have subsequently collaborated on the chart-topping Essential Teachings podcast to bring his work to a wider audience.

And although his books are now 25 years old, Tolle’s influence continues to permeate popular culture. His teachings feature across US rapper Kendrick Lamar’s 2022 album Mr Morale & the Big Steppers, which includes narration by Tolle himself.

Tolle has also previously participated as a key speaker at the Dalai Lama’s Peace Summit, and spoken alongside best-selling author Deepak Chopra.

Struck with severe depression at the age of 29, Tolle experienced a life-changing epiphany that helped him view his situation and his life through a new lens. “The awakening of human consciousness is no longer a luxury—it is a necessity for the survival of our species. It is up to each of us as individuals to embody the state of aware presence and thus rise above the egoic mind and its dysfunction. When a sufficient number of humans undergo this transformation, this will bring healing and sanity to our planet,” Tolle says.
