The doors to Africa’s highest urban bar will open to the public this weekend, boasting 360-degree views over one of the most-wooded cities in the world...
Named Alto234 (Alto for height in Latin and 234 for how tall it stands in meters), this breath-taking space is found on the rooftop of The Leonardo in Sandton and will serve only the world’s finest when it comes to drinks, bar tapas and service.
“There’s something dazzling about the combination of perfectly chilled champagne and panoramic city views stretching to the horizon”

“As leaders in hospitality, we are on a constant quest to find great lifestyle and entertainment spaces. The rooftop of the tallest building in South Africa is so exceptional that it had to be shared with all,” says Robert Hodson, COO of Legacy Hotels & Resorts. In celebration of the opening, Moët & Chandon, the bar’s preferred champagne supplier, gifted Alto234 with a special edition package. Delivered up to the 57th floor in grand champagne-style via helicopter, Joburg tongues have been wagging all week about what could be inside the box.
Revealed on social media today the package is a limited edition Moët Mini Machine which will offer guests the opportunity to experience French savoir-faire at its finest. Using Moët & Chandon tokens, guests can order Moët Mini 200ml bottles with golden sippers, right out of the machine at perfect temperature. Without doubt, it’s the most innovative champagne service in Africa and exclusive to Alto234. “There’s something dazzling about the combination of perfectly chilled champagne and panoramic city views stretching to the horizon. So, the partnership between Alto234 and Moët & Chandon was a natural one – after all, could there be a more perfect match than Africa’s highest bar and the world’s most loved champagne?” says Patrick Leslie, Portfolio Manager at RGBC.
Offering a variety of experiences, Alto234 will provide guests and tourists an opportunity to capture the amazing sights of Johannesburg at different times of the day – west to the Magaliesberg mountain range, north to the Voortrekker Monument, south to the once home of Nelson Mandela, and east to the planes taking off at OR Tambo International Airport. The space can accommodate up to 100 people across seven seating areas, each with its own unique view of the city below. The bar and food offering will be headed up by the award-winning AURUM Restaurant and shall be nothing short of sublime. The wine list conveys the best on offer from around the world as well as familiar favourites from the Cape Winelands. Cocktails will be fun, trendy and edgy with the right amount of sophistication. And for those feeling peckish, a luxury tapas menu will be available with a bespoke range of snacks, many of which have been paired with the bar menu.
