Joburg Ballet is thrilled to announce that the company’s award-winning production of La Traviata – The Ballet is coming to the stunning Teatro at Montecasino for the first time, offering a short season of just five performances from 2 to 4 August.
About the Performance
Winner of a 2021 Naledi Theatre Award, La Traviata – The Ballet is celebrated as one of the finest works by renowned choreographer Veronica Paeper, South Africa’s leading figure in classical ballet. Known for her full-length story ballets, Paeper has crafted a deeply moving portrayal of a woman who sacrifices everything for love, set to the unforgettable music of Verdi’s opera, arranged and adapted for ballet by composer Allan Stephenson.
Originally created in Cape Town in 1990, this production has enchanted audiences both locally and internationally, with critics praising it as “outstanding,” “graceful, passionate, and ravishingly romantic,” and “an utterly compelling production.”

La Traviata – The Ballet will feature four different casts in the leading roles across five performances:

A Message from Joburg Ballet
Commenting on the return of La Traviata – The Ballet to Johannesburg, Joburg Ballet CEO Elroy Fillis-Bell expressed, “We’re delighted to bring this magnificent ballet to the Teatro at Montecasino for the first time and to have Veronica Paeper, the doyenne of South African choreographers, with us to restage one of her most distinguished works. It’s a privilege to have Veronica working with our beautiful dancers in bringing this searing story of love and sacrifice to the stage. It’s also the perfect ballet to mark Shannon Glover’s 20th anniversary with Joburg Ballet, as Shannon returns to a role she has danced with great distinction in previous seasons.”
