The Melrose Gallery and Melrose Arch will once again host an exciting annual exhibition of sculptural works by many of South Africa’s established and emerging talents...
The inaugural sculpture fair in 2017 was extremely well received, attracting many of South Africa’s most respected sculptors, large audiences, extensive media exposure and impressive sales results.
The exhibition takes place within The Melrose Gallery’s large, modern, 290sqm space, which is perfectly suited to sculptural work and flows onto numerous public spaces within the precinct.
Melrose Arch is an exclusive urban precinct that is home to some of South Africa’s top corporate head offices and is frequented by those from the upper LSM groups who live, work and play here.
Some of the impressive line-up of artists who are confirmed for SculptX 2018 include: Noria Mabasa, Willie Bester, Wilma Cruise, Pitika Ntuli, Anton Smit, Vusi Khumalo, Carl Roberts, Strijdom van der Merwe, Andre Stead, Keith Calder, Christiaan Diedericks, Stanislaw Trzebinski, Ella Cronje, Martyn Schickerling, Ndabuko Ntuli, Marc Chapman, Mark Swart, Jon Wreal, Siyabulela Ndodana, Chris Soal, Chrisel van der Merwe, Lee-At Meyerov, Susan Woolf, Johan Nortjie, Lothar Bottcher, Arno Morland and Alexander von Klitzing.
Many of the large sculptures are destined to remain within the public areas for extended periods to create a permanent urban sculpture park
‘Our aim is for SculptX to provide a valuable platform for the promotion of talented sculptors and sculpture in general. We are witnessing an increasing demand for sculptural works and this and other political, social and economic factors have resulted in some interesting dialogues which we hope to explore further during SculptX’ says Zanele Mashumi, curator of The Melrose Gallery.
As part of SculptX 2018 The Melrose Gallery will be working with a panel of parties influential within this genre to plan a series of dialogues and talks to discuss issues of relevance to South African and African sculpture. This programme will be listed on www.themelrosegallery.com and promoted on www.facebook.com/themelrosegallery and entrance to the public will be free.
