THE PITCH

September is World Suicide Prevention Month, and World Suicide Prevention Day is on September 10. In light of this, we are highlighting the powerful and moving work of Glynis Horning, a prominent South African mental health journalist who has confronted the tragic reality of her son’s suicide. Glynis is available for interviews and discussions about her new book, which tackles the harsh realities of depression and suicide, aiming to reduce the stigma surrounding these issues.

THE BOOK

Waterboy: A Memoir of Loss and Grief by Glynis Horning explores the profound impact of losing a child to suicide. After discovering her 25-year-old son Spencer dead in his bed, Glynis and her husband Chris are thrust into a journey of grief, understanding, and remembrance. The book offers a raw and heartfelt narrative that delves into the pain of loss while celebrating the joys and memories of Spencer’s life. Horning’s writing captures both the agony of her experience and the hope that her story can offer solace and understanding to others facing similar tragedies.

Quote from Glynis Horning:

“If this book can help one person avoid suicide, or bring new understanding to those who have lost someone, it will have achieved its goal.”
