Summertime rush!

Joburg is gearing up for a fantastic season of horse racing action when the Summer In The City makes a return to Turffontein Racecourse.

It’s the perfect excuse for the ladies to put on a summery dress, glamorous heels and for the gents to strut their stuff in tailored jackets and suits. Sunglasses and hats are great race day accessories and come in handy when standing on the rail and screaming your horses home.

It’s a mixture of relaxation and excitement with the equine athletes and jockeys getting pulses racing on the track. Away from the adrenalin rush there’s the offer of good food and drinks. It’s why; Racing. It’s A Rush.

Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile – 4 November

Every year the Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile sees a host of  South Africa’s best-loved celebrities descend upon Turffontein  Racecourse for an event that gives back in a unique way.

The day sees celebrities dressed to the nines to cheer home the stars of the turf as their finishing positions in the Charity Mile (Gr 2) determine what portion of the R1-million goes to their respective  charities.

The concept is a simple one, 16 horses are paired with 16 celebrities, charities and media partners and everyone unites on the day to support one common goal: to support those less fortunate.

Last year’s event was won by New Predator and was something of a family affair with Gavin Lerena the jockey in the irons while his cousin, and now world champion boxer, Kevin Lerena representing the Peermont Education Trust – Bursary Programme.

Other celebrities who were part of the glittering affair last year included Amanda du-Pont, a darling of the South African social scene, as well as popular Expresso hosts Zoe Brown and Katlego Maboe.

Rapper and TV personality, Nomuzi Mabena wowed all with a dramatic, flowing dress while actress Michaela Russell, of Isidingo fame, was also a leading contender in the fashion stakes.

The best place to race from on the day is the popular City Deck area where you can enjoy a variety of delicious tastes, all enjoyed while overlooking the thrilling racing action on the track.

The Charity Mile race day also offers the perfect opportunity to show off  some of the finest fashions and trends this summer. There is no particular theme to think of which means anything goes as far as your interpretation of a day at the races is concerned.
